This is the score of my composition for the opening sequence to our film.
To create this composition, I decided to use Apple's 'Logic Pro X' music editing software as it has more features at my disposal to use compared to the basic 'Garageband' software, and the software instrument audios have more authenticity compared to music score software 'Sibelius'. The string timbre was inspired by Mica Levi's 'Under The Skin', and Bernard Herrmann's 'Psycho'. The melody was influenced by Max Richter's 'In the Nature of Daylight', and the last 6 bars came from elements of Hector Berlioz's 'Symphonie Fantastique'. Finally, for the chord progressions, I was drawn to Angelo Badalamenti's score for 'Twin Peaks' as he is the master of suspension chords and he blurs the line between major and minor keys. Overall, at the back of the mind I was always thinking about the audience and how they would respond e.g. the choice of minor keys links to the situation in which our main character resides: 1 year on from a disastrous court case and reflecting on how he has impacted the community. Also, the lower pitched bass adds an element of suspense for the audience, which are key ingredients for a mystery opening sequence. Here is the first cut for our opening sequence. At the moment, this does not look like an opening sequence because there is no music and titles to accompany the video and some of the audio sounds terrible. Also, some shots are overlong and dragged out which could look visually boring for the audience.
However, although there is still some work to be done, its helpful to get a foundation of our sequence so that we know whether we need to reshoot some of the scenes again (which we don't need to). After each day of filming, we decided to film a short roundtable video discussing what we did and how we could improve. This is the first of two videos in this format.
This is a behind the scenes vlog, which I edited, showcasing the two days when we were filming our opening sequence.
