From conducting this interview, I learned a few things from it:
What kind of Media Institution might distribute your media product and why? Although our budget was very small, therefore impossible to fund a film distribution company, it would still be useful to have a look at some of the options of distribution companies that would realistically release our film. If our Production Company was well known like 'Marvel Studios', we would probably be picked up by one of the big three shown here. This would be an incredible investment because they would release trailers and TV spots, create some viral marketing to add hype for the film, and utilise Comic Conventions (e.g. San Diego Comic Con) to promote the film. However even if we had the required budget to pay for distribution, I still would not use any of these three because they would likely care about the paycheck rather than the film's content. For example, 'Fast and Furious 8' was released by 'Universal Pictures' and has now become the highest grossing film for a three day weekend; the movie has a theme of family that is, unfortunately, ruined by a dull affair of car chases and fist fights. From this example, I would not like our movie to fall into a commercialised market as it would ruin our themes of our film and be treated as an investment rather than an piece of filmmaking. Three distribution companies that I think would potentially pick up our film would be Streaming Service 'Netflix', British based 'Curzon Artificial Eye', and fast growing independent cinema chain 'OurScreen'.
In terms of Netflix, it has turned from a rent-to-buy US service into a fully fledged Production and Distribution company that synergises with there Online Streaming platform to provide a market where new film-makers. For example, the recent 'Grand Jury Prize' winner at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival was 'I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore'. Usually, this film would have been released later in the year but Netflix picked up the distribution rights, therefore releasing it a few months later on their platform. However, the downside to using Netflix is that our movie won't make any money back because it is Online Viewing. 'Curzon Artificial Eye' (CAE)is an independent distributor that releases arthouse films like 'The Handmaiden', '45 Years', and 'Melancholia'. Although I think this company is perfect for our film, it would only be seen by a small number of people as CAE mostly show their movies in picture-house cinemas so it wouldn't reach a wider audience. Finally, 'OurScreen' would be the institution I would prefer because I think the concept is simple and effective. 'OurScreen' is a website that basically allows the public to create their own screenings from a list of films, providing they sell enough tickets on the website. Recently, 'My Feral Heart' became the highest selling film of 'OurScreen' showings in 2016 as it rarely appeared in UK cinemas. For me, this is the perfect platform for selling our film out because it would be shown and picked by people who want to see it and so would create a satisfying and rewarding experience for filmgoers. |
